Stone Questions & Answers

What is Marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed mostly of calcite formed when limestone is compressed for extended periods of time. Marble is more beautiful and durable than limestone.

What is Granite?

Granite is formed from hardened minerals such as quartz, feldspar and mica found deep within the earth’s mantle. Together these hardened minerals produce a highly durable stone making it ideal for kitchen counter tops resisting scratching and many household cleaners. Granite always contains tiny pits or spaces between its crystals however, on larger pieces of stone such pits appear unnoticed. The possibility of fissures, which looks like tiny cracks within the stone, may also occur. These fissures however, are a result of the stone’s formation process. These fissures are a natural part of the stone’s appearance and design and will not affect the durability of the stone. Granite may chip or crack but this is rare and usually happens only if impacted by a heavy object. Should this occur, chips and cracks in granite can easily be repaired.

What is Limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary stone formed over millions of years from remains of ancient marine life crushed by the earth’s pressure, usually from bodies of water. Limestone is typically light in color, extremely porous and soft by nature thus more difficult to keep blemish free. Limestone is not recommended for food preparation areas.

What is Travertine?

Travertine is derived from limestone that has been heated, crushed into marble, broken up and pushed through the earth’s surface.

What is Slate?

Slate is derived primarily from mudstone and shales. Slate typically contains clay minerals, chlorite, quartz and a variety of accessory phases such as epidote or iron oxides. Its beauty is the earthy coloring accompanied by the cleft, rough, uneven texture of its surface.

What is Engineered Stone?

Engineered stone is manmade materials that typically have a stone pumice and resin base. It is comprised of naturally quartz colored pigments and polyester resins available in a multitude of colors.

What is Terrazzo?

Terrazzo is a composite material poured in place or precast. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured, ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface. Terrazzo has no grout joints and is easily cared for.

Can stone me made thicker?

Standard thicknesses for stone slabs are either 3/4 (2cm) or 1 1/4 (3cm). It is possible to build up the stone to whatever thickness necessary and is commonly done to create fuller edges on counter tops.
Please see our Scope of Work / Edge Profile page.

Will the finished product look exactly like my sample piece?

No. Stone is a natural product of the earth with multiple variances such as movement, patterns and shading. Even though samples are selected to specifically show the variations and uniqueness, designs from slab to slab are unpredictable. Our clients can see the exact slab before the fabrication and installation process begins.

What is the difference between a drop-in sink and an under-mount sink?

A drop-in sink or self-rimming sink mounts into the counter top cutout. Edges are not finished because the sink overlaps the cutout on all sides. An under-mount sink sits below the cutout requiring all edges to be polished. This installation is most preferred by our clients.

Are seams necessary and will they show?

Seams in stone are not always necessary however it depends on the size and layout of your project. We do our best to minimize the use of seams. The visibility of seams depends strictly on the color, pattern and granularity of the stone.
